SYSTEMATIC DRAWINGS STATEMENT

Charcoal is one of the oldest man made and essential materials used for the progression of humanity. Man produced charcoal by removing water and varying ingredients from animal and vegetation material creating a carbon residue. The process is at once delicate and violent. With this material humans designed cave drawings and paintings during prehistoric times. I choose this material to produce these drawings because of its elemental qualities in the advancement of humanity and creation. The production of these drawings is rooted in printmaking, specifically monotypes. During the process of developing each drawing, a piece of canvas was dry brushed with powdered charcoal and then thrashed on the support making a distinct mark. The values and form on these drawings is controlled through the shape, amount of medium, and weight that is applied with each drawing stroke. Much like our own existence, each drawing is explicitly unique and carries specific characteristics from all the others. Viewed as a group, the unifying denominator is this uniqueness whose accidental nature is put into question as the accident is repeated time and time again, while recording a moment of turbulence and destruction followed by the creation of mysterious beauty.
